On June 24, 2019, President Donald Trumps signed an Executive Order to enhance a patient's ability "to choose the healthcare that is best for them." This requires hospitals to disclose to patients and consumers the price they charge insurers. However, many argue that this attempt will likely fail to bring down the costs associated with healthcare, especially since it would be unlikely that you can compare the prices of hospitals like you do hotels or yelp reviews. Other say that each hospital negotiates with insurers on prices, so if they are made public, it could put pressure on the insurance company to lower prices, ultimately resulting in the patient paying more.On the other hand, some people think that it's a really good idea to know what you might be paying for upfront, since most of the time you don't know how much it will cost you out of pocket until the procedure is done. It could be a step towards fixing the over-priced healthcare system.
In the Executive Order, Trump argues that "making meaningful price and quality information more broadly available to more Americans will protect patients and increase competition, innovation, and value in the health care system."
